The pride of the city is the Temple of Tooth, but the idyllic lake in the middle of the town and the world-famous Botanical Garden are also something to write home about. Kandy is very conscious of the historic role which it played as the Last Capital of the Singhalese Kingdom and seat of the Last Singhalese King, Rajasinghe II. Today the town is the intellectual and religious center of Sri Lanka, a result not least of the fact that Buddhists, Hindus, Moors and Christians all co-exist here. The university, founded in 1835, is the country’s largest by far. The inhabitants of Kandy like to see themselves as Sri Lanka’s elite, as the very description Kandyan indicates. The name Kandy, incidentally, is short for “Kanda Uda Pas Rata”, which means “Kingdom in the Mountains”. Kandy also a UNESCO – World Heritage Site.
